Pepper Spray and Self Defense
In magazines and on the net, there are bountiful articles relating to martial arts moves for self defense. Self defense training itself often consists of the strikes and kicks that you would call martial arts moves. However, there is so much more to personal safety than learning the ins and outs that go into physical self defense training.
Not everyone has the time to learn self defense before they may need to increase their personal safety. Students who are heading off to college or young women who may just be starting work where they will be walking to their vehicle at night. These are just some of the instances where self defense training would come in handy but may not be done soon enough for the person to be fully protected. In such instances, pepper spray makes a great alternative.
Even with the efficiency of pepper spray as a self defense tool; one should still learn the basics before heading into any type of scenario where they could possibly be a victim of crime or assault. This is equally true for men as it is for women, too. Along with learning to use pepper spray, one should also become familiar with martial arts moves like the elbow strike, head butt or knee thrust. These may not strictly be martial arts moves; but they work great for self defense.
Pepper spray is a highly effective tool; one that should be used properly. If you’re not careful, you run the risk of spraying it in the wrong direction, allowing it to go off in your purse or pocket, or hurting someone unintentionally. To use pepper spray properly takes a little training and effort; but with the end result being that you are well protected; it’s totally worth it.
First, why is pepper spray considered to be such a good tool for self defense? The answer is simple: there is no other tool that will temporarily steal your assailant’s ability to hurt you as quickly as pepper spray. Not even the taser can compete! Pepper spray can be used from a farther distance than a taser, and the effects of pepper spray intensify before they lessen. The total time it takes for pepper spray to lose its intensity is more than 20 minutes. That gives the victim more than enough time to get away and get to safety!
There are two things to know about pepper spray before you buy it. One, you need to know the law. Most states do allow people of a certain age to carry pepper spray freely. Some states, however, have laws that allow only a certain concentration to be used against humans (and a higher concentration to be used against animals). It is therefore important to know what concentration you are allowed to carry.
The second thing to know is about concentration. This means the percentage of OC, or oleoresin capsicum. OC is what makes cayenne peppers hot. This is the inflammatory agent that causes major irritation to any individual. So if you are attacked by someone who is sober, drunk, or high; they will not escape the wrath of your pepper spray.
